QUOTED: Technology Review

A Twitter chat with Christopher Mims quickly became this piece on MIT's Technology Review blog about the potential of Apple to break open the market for near-field communication (NFC). It put me in the ironic role of being the brakes on techno-utopianism, pointing to the barriers to any one player making NFC happen, particularly in the area of payments.

It's an area I've been following since the early 1990s, so I've seen a bit of history in the areas of electronic payments, new forms of money, and new communication technologies. My comments in the article aren't to say it won't happen, and Apple is certainly able to move mountains in fields others have already developed technology and applications, but the barriers to scaling are high. Still, here's hoping.
